Heroes, poetry and politics: The bandeirantes in the ricardian plot

Abstract

This study will analyze the ways in which the poem Martim Cererê (1927) by Cassiano Ricardo romanticized the figure of the bandeirante. To do so, we will problematize the interfaces between this literary work and the appropriation of the bandeirante as a political symbol in the Bandeira Movement (1935-1937). Our proposal will bring to light the ways in which this writer reinvented the heroic narratives about the bandeirante to give meaning and national identity and projects of Nationhood in the mid-1930s. Finally, we will demonstrate that the writing of this poem interacted with various cultural, political and historical dimensions that were present in Brazilian society
