Uses of the idea of ‘electoral power’ during the regency period of the Brazilian Empire

Abstract

This article critically examines the concept of electoral power as employed by political faction s
during the regency period (1831-1840) in theBrazilian Empire. Specifically, it investigates how the “ fervent liberals” reappropriated and redefined this notion in the aftermath of D. Pedro I’s abdication, as part of their political struggle. Drawing on a comprehensive analysis of primary sources such as newspapers, official documents, and legal works, the study aims to elucidate the motivations behind their actions and how they capitalized on the lack of consensus surrounding the definition of “electoral power”. Notably, the article also considers the observations of Silvestre Pinheiro Ferreira (1769-1846) on this subject and how these men appropriated its ideas and gave it a new meaning. By employing electoral issues as a potent instrument amidst the crisis that reshaped the political landscape after April 7, the article contributes to a deeper understanding of the political dynamics during the early stages of the regency era.
