A graphic novel Medea: myth, reception of antiquity, and terrorism in Mariana Waechter’s Medeia

This paper aims to analyze Mariana Waechter’s graphic novel Medeia (2014) and how the artist creates a graphic narrative in order to discuss terrorism discourse in 2010s Brazil, when the country was shaken by street protests. The graphic novel is analyzed through the lens of reception of antiquity in graphic novels, a theme increasingly explored in Classical Studies. The paper examines how the myth of Medea has been recently used to address social issues and how the Greek heroine is a plural figure who encompasses themes such as the social status of foreigners, feminism, and alterity issues.
