"Historical, Anthropological, and Political Perspectives on the Olympic Games: 130 Years of the Olympic Movement"

Deadline for submission: January 31, 2025.

The 20th century witnessed the rise of the Olympic Games as a mega-event that transcended political, cultural, and social boundaries, becoming one of the greatest sporting phenomena of contemporary times. Since the creation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894 and the inaugural Olympic Games in 1896, the institution has served as a platform for historical achievements, controversies, and transformations in the conceptualization of sports. This marks the third occasion on which the French capital has hosted the Olympic Games (1900, 1924, and 2024), affording a singular opportunity to examine the continuities and changes that have defined a century of Olympic competitions.

This issue aims to provide a critical examination of the development of the Olympic Games throughout the 20th century, with a particular focus on the events held in Paris and the establishment of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It will consider a range of social, anthropological, economic, technological, historical, and historiographical aspects. By employing a diverse array of methodological and disciplinary approaches, our objective is to present a comprehensive and multifaceted analysis of the forces that have shaped the Olympic Games and their impact on Western society over the past 130 years of their trajectory.
