Dossier: Feminist and LGBTQ + struggles for democracy in Brazil
The period for submitting articles to the dossier "Feminist and LGBTQ + struggles for democracy in Brazil" is open until January 31th, 2019
This dossier intends to historicize and problematize the feminist and LGBTQ + (Lesbian, Gay, Transvestite, Transsexual etc.) struggles for democracy in Brazil. We prioritize temporal milestones, the second half of the twentieth century, when international feminism emerges, and in Brazil, feminisms of the "second wave" and the homosexual movement; and the first decades of the 21st century, when these movements multiply and diversify subjects, demands and strategies of mobilization. Therefore, researches that are concerned with historically analyzing the resistance strategies undertaken by women and LGBTQ +, from the end of the civil-military dictatorship, in the period of redemocratization, in the last democratic governments, but also in the present time. We will discuss how democracy - a word present in pamphlets, periodicals, publications, street demonstrations and other interventions - was mobilized in the struggles of these subjects. If, as Michel de Certeau (2008) points out, the historiographic practice - from the gathering of documents to the writing of the book - is entirely relative to the "structure of society", it is urgent to think of these struggles in the present time, marked by the advance of the ultraconservative and the rise of feminicide and LGBTophobia.
Dossier: The practices of power in Middle Ages and its representations: new borders, new meanings
The period for submitting articles to the dossier "The practices of power in Middle Ages and its representations: new borders, new meanings", to be published in the July 2019 issue of Anos 90, is open until November 1st, 2018.
This dossier will intend to contemplate medieval researches dedicates of Medieval History based on actuals historiographic problems and on questions about the writing the History in that period, the relation of power, justice, and political history. The proposed dossier aims to expand the visibility of Latin American historiographic production in the field of medieval studies. It has, therefore, the intention of receiving contributions from researchers connected with institutes of Latin America that are dedicated to the theme in its different historiographic approaches.
The dossier, titled "The practices of power in Middle Ages and its representations: new borders, new meanings", is a proposal of the RED/e, a Latin American network of Medieval Studies, which brings together historians from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica and Mexico. The proposal justification is based on the fact that, in the last two decades, it is possible to perceive a substantial growth of the research in History of Middle Ages. Beyond this quantitative growth, it’s possible to perceive a diversity and originality at the historiographic, thematic, and conceptual approaches of these works, strengthening this area of research among non-European historians.
Thus, this proposal has a potential for broad participation of researchers from outside Brazil, which is in accordance with the inherent proposal of the Anos 90 and PPG in History of UFRGS with regard to internationalization of research produced in Brazil and recognition of Brazilian academic spaces as important spaces for the production of knowledge in Latin America.
Dossier: African resistances: new issues and debates
Proposta do dossiê:
Dossier: "History and Heritage: theoretical and methodological issues"
Purpose of the dossier:
This dossier aims to compile articles that concentrate on theoretical and methodological issues regarding three possibilities of interface between history and heritage. The first one, which has been accepted not only by strictu sensu post-graduate programs in History but also by a myriad of interdisciplinary programs created in Brazil in the last decades, focuses on the academic investigations about the processes of patrimonialization and uses of the past. The second possibility addresses the performance of the professional historian on a battlefield, examining the clashes regarding practices and representations about cultural goods and the past. Finally, the third interface is related to the teaching of history and involves more specifically Brazilian educational policies, which have placed patrimony as an axis of transversal approaches in the school curriculum. In any of these areas of study on heritage, a solid theoretical and methodological development constitutes a prerogative for the advancement of reflection on the specificity of the contributions of historical knowledge to this topic, as well as for the interdisciplinary sharing and debate with the other areas involved. Hence, the History and Heritage Dossier (Dossiê História e Patrimônio) is an invitation for researchers to systematize their theoretical and methodological reflections on the possibilities of the interface listed above. It aims to discuss the authors and concepts used, as well as the methodologies put into action in order to sort out problems. To pursue this objective, case studies should be avoided unless they contribute to the comprehension of the theoretical and methodological issues addressed.
The period for submitting articles to the dossier is open until April 30th, 2018.
Dossiê: Violência, Guerra e Migração no Mundo Antigo

Dossiê: DILEMAS E POSSIBILIDADES DA PÓS-GRADUAÇÃO EM HISTÓRIA NO BRASIL

Dossier: (IN) Justice at Work: Emerging Issues and Permanent Challenges
The period for submitting articles to the dossier "(IN) Justice at Work: Emerging Issues and Permanent Challenges" is open until January 30th, 2020.
Dossier editors: Dra. Christine Paulette Yves Rufino Dabat (Universidade Federal de Pernambuco), Dra. Juliana Alves de Andrade (Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco) e Dr. Thomas D. Rogers (Emory Universityof Arts and Sciences. Atlanta, Geórgia, EUA)
This proposed dossier aims to problematize the questions of (in) justice and workers' rights in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The transformations generated by the individual and / or collective actions of various historical subjects in defense of their rights, have led to the emergence of contemporary issues that are challenging to the field of history. We welcome papers addressing these questions, including but not limited to the following themes: the different social and cultural practices of protection against bullying and sexual harassment, practices and laws to combat exhausting work hours and degrading conditions, the cartography of migratory flows of female workers and their impacts, strategies to eradicate the exploitation of child labor, and the fight against labor reform in Europe and North and South America. We seek to gather works that investigate the trajectory of men and women who appealed to the judiciary to guarantee their rights, the negotiations around the legal regime of work, the impacts of laws on workers’ everyday lives, the mobilization of workers, the roles of class organizations, and studies of enslaved, liberated, and free workers and the establishment of connections between slavery and post-abolition. These individual or collective trajectories of access to the courts, the records of which are captured in court sources, help us to see advances and ongoing challenges in securing the rights won.
Dossier: THE HISTORIOGRAPHY OF THE JESUIT MISSIONS: THE WRITING AND THE TIME
The period for submitting articles to the dossier "THE HISTORIOGRAPHY OF THE JESUIT MISSIONS: THE WRITING AND THE TIME" is open until January 10th, 2020.
Studies of the missionary spaces in which the Jesuits acted have undergone a significant renewal since the late twentieth century, when the traditional approaches to praise or detract from the Jesuits and their missions were overcome. In the same vein, there has since been a fruitful expansion of themes and approaches for the study of missions, for example, from perspectives that directed their interest to cultural and symbolic issues. This movement was then joined by another equally renewing movement, capable of producing a substantial change in the perspective by which the theme is analyzed, concerning the recovery, for non-European populations, of an active place in the configuration of the symbolic and material elements that constituted such a story. It was fundamentally, in the case of the Americas, as Celestino de Almeida (2010) said, to bring indigenous populations from the “backstage to the stage”. Thus, we can say that the study of missionary spaces remains coated with analytical density in the present moment, installing, among other things, fruitful discussions about the processes of cultural contact and their unfolding. The dossier intends to be a space for broadening such debate based on the contribution of experts in the field.

História, Artes e Juventude: o mundo na virada do século
Coordenadores/Coordinadores/Coordinators: Dr. Edwar Castelo Branco, Federal University of Piauí, Brasil; Dra. Paula Guerra, University of Porto, Portugal; Dr. Matthew Worley, University of Reading, United Kingdom
O dossiê pretende articular história, arte e juventudes, entre a segunda metade do século XX e o início do século atual. A problematização do quadro apontado é o principal objetivo do dossiê ora proposto.
The dossier aims to articulate history, art and youth, between the second half of the twentieth century and the beginning of the current century. The aim is to take this chronological cut to illuminate the conditions of existence within which historical objects such as Tropicália, the PO-EX, environmental anti-art, the hippie movement, the beat generation, pop-art, proto-punk, krautrock, (post)punk, etc. emerged and, under the guise of such movements, to inquire into parts of the youth that lived in spaces such as Portugal, England and Brazil. This intention has to do precisely with the fact that in the middle of the last century these young people had discovered the limits of language, the equivocity of meanings and the interval between the word and the thing. In the limit, one may say that the manifestations of art and the juvenile experiences in this period are part of a historical context in which a crisis of legitimation will be at the centre of the ways in which the youngsters had to know and re-know the world. The young people who embodied the aforementioned movements had to deal, on the one hand, with a growing complexification of the world, which demanded the excavation of new modes of expression, while, on the other hand, they had to face the fury of the police in different regions of the world. Thus, these young people had to fence the word as a weapon, for they already knew that senses and meanings are not mere results of the links between words and things, but social productions, to the extent that words not only say things, but produce senses and effects of truth. The problematisation of the framework pointed out is the main objective of the dossier now proposed. Admitting that the proposed period is a historical moment when places become confused, at this moment urban youth, in different parts of the world, will take upon themselves the task of prospecting new artistic languages. In this way, the dossier, under the pretext of the premise of arts and youth, proposes to bring together studies from the mid-twentieth century to the beginning of the current century in different regions of the planet from the North to the Global South.

Disputed memories: demonstrations in public space
The recent empowerment of populations previously relegated to living under the patronage of the dominators who imposed colonization, slavery of the Africanized population, slavery and the reduction to servility of indigenous populations, dependency and inequality, forces us to understand that the demands of the Latin American popular classes are not only related to food security, employment, housing, education and health; but also refer to the demands for the recognition of their cultures, memories, their worldviews and their own stories. The proposal of this dossier addresses that need of the popular classes and social movements and, even more, seeks to make their leading roles visible. Therefore, the dossier´s main subject is the recent popular interventions in the public space, carried out by organized or spontaneous social movements, which aim to question, discuss, recreate and redefine the official memories modeled by the state. Such manifestations tend to put official history in tension by inserting other discourses, people or groups in the memorial landscape whose social identities are underrepresented or, even, excluded. These public demonstrations tried to alter monuments or even the memorial landscape in countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Nicaragua and raised issues that can be exemplified by the following oppositional pairs: memories of the conquest of America and European colonization facing memories of groups and ethnic groups held to slavery, genocide or ethnocide; Democratic rule of law versus authoritarian state; demarcation of places related to serious human rights violations against the silencing of those memories; colonial history versus decolonial history.
The dossier anticipates contributions on memories linked to processes of genocide, ethnocide, slavery, among other atrocities committed against human rights. It also foresees contributions on recent processes of empowerment of subordinate populations and their manifestations in places of memory, that suggest disputed memories and can be seen as a symptom of popular dissatisfaction with public space, representing new knowledge that exceeds hegemonic epistemological borders. In practical terms, the articles can deal with cases, based on the characterization of disputed spaces, the political context of the demonstration and its repercussions. Recovering the memories of genocidal processes in the form of personal stories, testimonies, literary representations can be a way to combat the danger of denialism that threatens the victims and seeks, through various paths, to minimize, justify, relativize and, in extreme formulations, deny plainly what happened. This way of monumentalizing memory, in a certain way founded on the experience of the Shoah, can be applied to other historical circumstances in which aesthetic representation in general, and literary representation in particular, functions as a monument that, at times, reinforces the representations already agreed. Although, it also disputes the ways of representing the episodes, even reaching the limit of producing paradigmatic changes. In theoretical terms, reflections can be mobilized around places of memory and sites of conscience, memories in dispute, cultural heritage, public history, reparation policies and social identities. Articles on pedagogy of history and heritage will be welcome.
Local Perspectives in Global Times. Glocal History as a theoretical and methodol
According to the Oxford dictionary, the anglicism term Glocal is defined as that "which refers to both global and local factors or brings together characteristics of both realities". This concept, born and applied in the fields of business and culture, has in recent decades been transferred to the field of history. Thus, this concept applied to historical studies allows us to understand from those processes of "early globalization" that had Latin America as a major protagonist (Hausberger 2018), to reach local or regional objects of study, or if preferred, of a much more delimited geographical scope. Thus, from this perspective, Glocal History will be understood by some authors as one of the modalities of Global History (Aram 2019) and therefore focuses on local phenomena that have a global impact (Torre 2018), achieving with this approach "decentering history", in the terms of Natalie Zemon Davis (2011). Therefore, these Glocal studies develop a true "play of scales" (Revel 1996, De Vries 2020) and allow the historian to reflect and find many times at the local level those global connections that national historiographies "extinguished or hid" (Gruzinski 2001:87). This movement between different scales of analysis will therefore be crucial to understanding these objects of study (Pons 2013). Without forgetting in this sense that biographical and/or personal trajectories will be of great interest for this perspective, recently called Global Micro-History by some authors (Andrade 2010, Trivellato 2011, Ghobrial 2014, among others) and criticized to the same extent by other researchers (Medick 2016, Levi 2018). For all these reasons, this Dossier entitled Local Perspectives in Global Times. Glocal History as a theoretical-methodological variable in historical studies of the American space (15th-19th centuries) aims to bring together a series of articles that are framed within this historiographical perspective, using its theoretical and methodological tools to explain and analyse historical phenomena from the 15th to the 19th century. This broad time frame will undoubtedly allow for a significant debate on a perspective of study that until now has not had a specific dossier in scientific journals in the field of history. In the current year 2022, some of the coordinators of this Dossier launched the International Seminar on Glocal History (SIGlo), which is being held at the Department of American History of the University of Seville, Spain, and has been very well received in the five editions held so far, both by the participating researchers from various prestigious European and American institutions and by the public attending in person and virtually. For this reason, we believe that this Dossier can be a valid mechanism for capturing a large part of the debates and reflections initiated during this activity.
O rural, a ciência e o meio ambiente
The environmental issue has been on the discussion agendas for a long time but has become an urgent matter in recent decades. The historiography produced on the subject has shown that debates about the consequences of human intervention in nature closely resemble current ones, dating back to the early modern period when “a series of transformations occurred in the way men and women of all social levels perceived and classified the natural world around them” (THOMAS, 2010, p. 19). From this, another concept of nature emerged, associating the need for acquired mastery with knowledge built about the environment (LENOBLE, 2002, p. 183). Along this path, the adoption of more forceful measures to address environmental destruction issues coincides with the final decades of the 20th century. The holding of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), which took place in Brazil in June 1992, is one of the key events demonstrating this new global stance on the issue. Similarly, the choice of Belém do Pará to host the 30th UN Conference on Climate Change (COP30) in 2025 underscores the significance of the problem and Brazil's role in international debates surrounding environmental preservation and climate change.
Concurrently, when following the discussions on environment and development, it becomes evident that, in addition to matters concerning the need to reduce levels of pollutant emissions and protect forested areas, the subjects of science and agriculture are recurrent. In general, studies on the issue have indicated that historically, the advance of agriculture, particularly intensive capital monoculture towards forested areas, is one of the main reasons for deforestation and the extinction of many forms of life, ways of inhabiting the world, and conceiving the planet Earth itself. Moreover, this process has amplified the emergence of environments conducive to the production of new pathogens that can lead to epidemics and pandemics (WALLACE, 2020, p. 527). However, contrary to this analysis, other readings argue that such expansion is necessary, as it depends on the production of food to secure humanity's future. In other words, we can affirm that this dilemma is one of the current expressions of the old and common debate between backwardness and progress, which accompanies the construction of the notion of modernity, whose foundations began to be established from the 16th century, marking the process of conquest and colonization of non-European spaces.
Within this realm of issues, much debate has revolved around the role that science and scientific knowledge have been and will be playing in addressing the problems resulting from how humanity has historically dealt with nature. Thus, this dossier proposal, through the analysis of different historical contexts and periods, aims to discuss how the interrelationships between science, the environment, and agriculture, as currently practiced, are responsible for the dramatic situation we are experiencing. Likewise, it explores how this relationship can point to different paths for overcoming the problems it generates. Therefore, this proposal seeks to thematically encompass issues of great relevance and significant historiographical impact because it is undoubtedly a necessary discussion in historical, political, social, cultural, and economic terms.
The breakage between the obsession with novelty that characterizes modernity and the invention of the awareness of change through the emergence of a horizon of expectation inaugurates an era of acceleration caused by the pressure of “non-human” agents. The resulting loss of belief in historical change creates a dual challenge. On the one hand, to our ability to deal with crucial problems that were generated by this movement before which we are currently in a position of denial and which we call modernity. On the other hand, the very will to revisit this past and invest efforts in it to establish comprehensive and innovative reformulations that allow us to identify new elements of historical reconstitution that overcome the impasses currently experienced.
The dossier, thus, intends to bring together research that proposes innovative contributions to the reflection on the crucial moment of passage between the Middle Ages and Modernity. Historical place where one of the most powerful foundations of the idea of modernity is erected, which confrontation, as shown by Pierre Charbonnier, is fundamental for understanding and solving the crises of our time. In response to this scenario, we intend to put together researchers who have recently rethought questions that help to reconfigure the understanding of the passage from the Middle Ages to Modernity, illuminating new aspects and pointing to new syntheses.
Based on this issue, the dossier intends to assemble studies that point to debates, reflections and analyzes through the understanding of events, phenomena, authors, or documentary groups that contemplate issues related, simultaneously, to the domain of communication and circulation in different dimensions of the sphere supralocal space. It is intended, therefore, to touch on a fundamental topic of the canon about the emergence of modernity, through a retrospective route of historical constitution that puts the relationship between the two periods in critical perspective. It asks how, between the 12th and 17th centuries, people, objects and texts that circulated were involved in communicating experiences and what their participation in processes of change and, finally, how they can help us to requalify them.
Colonial Borders, Cultural Mediators and Documentary Records. Border Subjects and Dynamics in Dialogue
The colonial borders of Brazil, as well as the rest of America, were spaces of encounters, disputes and reformulations of the logics of those human groups that coexisted there; a process of dialogue that carried with it the experiences of each of the subjects involved; subjects, among whom we have to consider men, women and children who were able to take care of their own interests, as well as the aspirations of their communities of origin, articulating them with those proper to the colonizers. Starting from considering the borders as spaces of encounter and dialogue between diverse human groups, considering the links with the non-humans, it is that we can find in the colonial documentation various witnesses and testimonies about the life of those subjects who acted in the border spaces, articulating and making intelligible logics and ways of linking with those considered others; whether those others are the indigenous people in their relationship with the colonial power or those indigenous people who had conflicts with other Amerindians due to their affinity with the different mechanisms of colonial power.
It is from this minimum definition of the border, and from noting the important role played by some men, women and children, that we invite you to present original, completed or ongoing research, which focus your interest on providing visibility to the diverse historical subjects who, for some particular reason, did not have their existence fully recorded by the various colonial power devices. Forms of recording the past and construction of memory that have to consider the Amerindian accounts as a way of accessing the colonial past, in order to thus complexify what we know about the colonial past and its borders, whether they are material, symbolic, ideological or imaginary.
Resuming the debate on the borders, discussing the processes of invisibilization of the indigenous populations, whether in the Portuguese portion or in the parts administered by Spain, as well as in the borders of the Iberian crowns, allows us to question the erasure of various forms of Amerindian memory, rescuing those historical subjects who experienced diverse experiences; the same ones that, from their critical knowledge, can generate innovative results for specialized historiography, in addition, of course, to connecting historians and other researchers from diverse historiographical traditions.
The 20th century witnessed the rise of the Olympic Games as a mega-event that transcended political, cultural, and social boundaries, becoming one of the greatest sporting phenomena of contemporary times. Since the creation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894 and the inaugural Olympic Games in 1896, the institution has served as a platform for historical achievements, controversies, and transformations in the conceptualization of sports. This marks the third occasion on which the French capital has hosted the Olympic Games (1900, 1924, and 2024), affording a singular opportunity to examine the continuities and changes that have defined a century of Olympic competitions.
This issue aims to provide a critical examination of the development of the Olympic Games throughout the 20th century, with a particular focus on the events held in Paris and the establishment of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It will consider a range of social, anthropological, economic, technological, historical, and historiographical aspects. By employing a diverse array of methodological and disciplinary approaches, our objective is to present a comprehensive and multifaceted analysis of the forces that have shaped the Olympic Games and their impact on Western society over the past 130 years of their trajectory.
Produções historiográficas e intelectuais sobre mulheres e feminismos latino-americanos
Since it emerged as a field of knowledge production in the 1970s and 1980s, women's history (and later gender relations and feminism) has spawned an impressive range of research, theoretical reflections, and publications in a variety of forms. Disseminating the results of research was and has been key to circulating knowledge that is multiple in terms of themes, sources, periods, and approaches. In this little more than half a century of research, despite the intense production of research and theoretical and methodological reflections, there have been fewer frequent analyses of the intellectual paths taken by scholars and the meanings of such production over time. Given the significant time that has elapsed since work began in this area and the considerable mass of results, we believe it is important and desirable to open up space for reflections focused especially on historiographical analysis, seeking to understand the historicity of production and its development paths.
The start of this research field in our region coincides with the expansion of women's and feminist movements so that academic production in the area of women's studies can hardly be thought of in isolation from social processes. Understanding this type of production implies surveying the referential works that have been important for studies on the different themes that deal with women/gender and feminisms. In this same chronological period, Latin America attracted a great deal of interest from foreign academics who carried out important intellectual work, whose works have become a reference for women's mobilizations and figures. Therefore, we must retrace the paths taken by women's history, understanding how this production was received and given new meaning.
Thus, this proposal covers works that propose to provide historiographical analyses and assessments of these fundamental themes, focusing on the production of women, gender, and feminisms in Latin America, from the colonial period to the present. This material should be gathered and analyzed to understand which aspects have been most explored by historiography and intellectual production in other areas of the Human Sciences, how much work has been concentrated on certain themes, where there are gaps in other areas and the key analytical points of the discussions on each proposed collaborative theme. It is also desirable to be able to measure/question the impact of the theoretical contributions in these productions from all these periods, such as the social history of women, debates on gender relations, queer theory, intersectionalities, decoloniality, and feminist criticism. Theoretical approaches, after all, have also contributed to the emergence of new investigative paths that have marked historiographical production on women, gender, and feminisms in Latin America.
Revisiting production paths with a historiographical focus means weighing up what has been analyzed over time on a given topic. Proposing a file of this nature also implies an interest in the formative paths of historians and researchers from other areas who have dedicated themselves to studying women/gender and Latin American feminisms, aiming to examine their trajectories, understand their motivations, the degree of engagement of their productions, the limits they found in terms of the interpretative paths they proposed, the doors they opened in their research and analysis, the prejudices they faced, and the strategies they articulated to overcome them. It means thinking about the roles of these characters who, in doing historical research on the subject, also ended up making history. This is a concern that has been addressed by different authors in recent times. Here, we are asking not only what is the history of those who have made the history of women, gender, and feminisms in general, but also how this has happened specifically in Latin America. In addition, it is worth inquiring about the relationship between the production of knowledge in this part of the continent and other centers of production, such as the United States and Spain, which, in addition to having a marked historical and power relationship with Latin American countries, cultivate a relevant historiographical production as “Latin Americanists”.
