Focus and Scope

Anos 90 is the open access e-journal of the Postgraduate Program in History at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (PPGH / UFRGS). It aims to disseminate advanced and recent research in the area of history and related areas which contributes to the production of historical knowledge and fosters discussion and research.

Anos 90 publishes original and unpublished articles resulting from recent research carried out in History and related areas in Portuguese, English, and Spanish . All manuscripts have been approved in the blind peer review process either in continuous flow or for thematic dossiers.

Annually the Anos 90 publish a call for submission of proposals of thematic dossiers that are evaluated by the Executive Editorial Committee and external experts. The organizers of the approved proposals are responsible for suggesting to the Editorial Committee the evaluators of the articles submitted to the dossier. The articles submitted to the dossiers undergo the same blind peer review process that the articles and reviews submitted in a continuous flow. Anos 90 may also publish interviews, translations, and historical documents if the Editorial Committee, the dossiers organizers, and the Advisory Board regard them as relevant.

Peer Review Process

All manuscripts will be evaluated by the Editorial Board and, once they adhere to the norms, they will be submitted to blind peer review by two scholars in the field. In case of divergence between the referees regarding the acceptance of the manuscript for publication, another review will be carried out by a third scholar. At the end of the review process, the author will be informed whether their article has been accepted, rejected or accepted with changes, along with the comments written by the referees.

Open Access Policy

This journal offers immediate free access to its content, grounded on the principle that providing free scientific knowledge to the public allows greater democratization of knowledge.

Upon submission of their text to Anos 90, the author accepts our free access policy. Authors do not have to pay a submission fee or a review service fee.

Anos 90 uses CC-BY license for Open Access. This license enables other people to share, adapt, and build upon the authors’  work, even for commercial purposes, as long as the authors are given due credit for their original material.

 

Code of ethics and responsibilities of those involved in journal practices

Anos 90 Editorial Board  are composed of  an Editor-in-Chief, an Editorial Committee and an Advisory Board that work along with anonymous authors and reviewers to ensure the quality, novelty and relevance of the published texts. All members must comply with to the ethical conduct code in all journal practices.

 

The Graduate Program in History at UFRGS is responsible for:

  • appointing the Editor-in-Chief;
  • monitoring the appropriateness of the journal's editorial practices;
  • providing conditions for the publication of the journal and the maintenance of the integrity of its archives.

 

The Editor-in- Chief is in charge of:

  • taking responsibility for rejecting or accepting articles, based solely on their originality, clarity, relevance and appropriateness  regarding the journal's mission, based on the comments written by the reviewers;
  • verifying that the manuscripts submitted adhere to the norms of the journal;
  • ensuring that all articles which adhere to the norms are submitted  to the evaluation of at least two anonymous reviewers who hold a PhD title and who are knowledgeable about the subject;
  • ensuring that the blind peer review process takes place;
  • pursuing  the continuous improvement of the quality of the journal by communicating with the members of the Editorial Committee and Advisory Council and by taking part  in forums related to the publishing of periodicals;
  • acting in a transparent and fair manner when exercising their duties, without discrimination against any author by gender, sexual orientation, religion or political beliefs, ethnic, class or geographical origin.

 

Authors are responsible for:

  • submitting articles adhering to the norms of publication in the journal, available at: www.seer.ufrgs.br/anos90;
  • complying with the rules of the Creative Commons License Attribute BY;
  • sending original articles free from plagiarism, self-plagiarism or fraudulent data;
  • ensuring that the article (or any significant excerpt ) has not been published anywhere else and has not been submitted to any other publication;
  • having the necessary permission to use images and  inform it in the body of the text;
  • ensuring that, in the case of articles submitted in co-authorship, all authors, in a maximum number of 3, have participated in the formulation of the problem / argument, in their theoretical and methodological process of analysis, in the analysis of sources and their interpretation , in the writing and revising process of the manuscript, and are committed to all the practices involved in the production of the article (ethical issues, lack of plagiarism, originality, due use of images and illustrations, etc.).

 

Anos 90 rejects co-authorship by mentors or supervisors in manuscripts resulting from their students' graduate research.

 

Anonymous peer reviewers are in charge of:

  • notifying the editor about any conflict of interest in relation to the article submitted and, if necessary,  declining to review that manuscript;
  • keeping the confidentiality of any information provided by the editor or the author, without saving a copy of the manuscript after the process is over. The referee may make public that they have reviewed for Anos 90, but without disclosing any further information on the review.
  • not making use of the information obtained in the review process for their own or any other person’s or organization’s advantage, or  to disadvantage or discredit others;
  •  warning the editor about any content already published or submitted which is substantially similar to the one under their review.

 

PROCEDURE IN CASES OF UNETHICAL BEHAVIOR

 

 

Complaints received by Anos 90 will be evaluated and answered by the Editor-in-Chief and the Editorial Committee.

Evidence of misconduct should be collected, preventing any claim from spreading beyond those who really need to know about the investigations while they are in progress.

Minor problems will be solved without further consultation. In any event, the author (s) or  referee (s) should have the opportunity to respond to any charge.

The Editorial Committee and the coordination of the Graduation Program in History at UFRGS are responsible for investigating possible complaints about the Editor-in-Chief.

 

Possible results of the investigation of complaints (in order of severity, which may be applied separately or jointly):

 

1. Inform or educate the author or reviewer when there is a lack of understanding or non-application of acceptable behavior patterns.

2. Publish a formal notice item describing the misconduct.

3. Publish the formal retraction of the article already published.

4. Report the event to the institution to which the person responsible for the unethical act is bound, to the professional association, or to the highest authority for further investigation and action.
