Abstract

Throughout the 13th century, the friars followers of Dominic of Guzman went through a fierce internal battle over the acceptance of the female religious life associated with the Order of Friars Preachers. The anonymous nun who, at the end of the 1250s, wrote a brief narrative about the house in which she lived, the monastery of Sant’Agnese of Bologna, at first hand testimonies to this dispute. The objective of this article is to analyze this text, which receives two titles from its editors – Chronica monasterii S. Agnetis and Vita beatae Dianae – which demonstrates the many possibilities of interpretation that it presents. If on the one hand it is a chronicle that aims to list the evidence that links the house of Sant’Agnese to the friars preachers, on the other it is a hagiography of its founder, Sister Diana de Andaló, which also serves to confer spiritual
legitimacy on the monastery.
