Abstract

Aim: To present a new clinical tool (ProBite®) for determining the interocclusal space, providing precision in the manufacture of occlusal splints, both in conventional and digital workflows, in order to facilitate the manufacture and measurement of the appropriate thickness. Materials and Methods: The ProBite® tool was developed from polyacetal material (POM) and consists of two posterior palettes with different thicknesses and one anterior palette. The study describes its clinical use for measuring and stabilizing the interocclusal space, both in the conventional workflow (wax impression and registration) and in the digital workflow with an intraoral scanner. Results: ProBite® was effective in determining the appropriate posterior interocclusal space, which is a determining factor for occlusal splints' ability to endure occlusal forces without risk of fracture. The tool also proved to be stable and accurate in the digital workflow, allowing for real-time adjustments during design. Conclusion: ProBite® could simplify interocclusal registration, reducing clinical time in both workflows, increasing precision in making occlusal splints, and ensuring adequate thickness and increased longevity.

He holds a PhD in Dentistry from PUCPR (2013), a Master's degree in Health Sciences from PUCPR (2010), and is a specialist in TMD and Orofacial Pain from the Federal University of Paraná (2005). He has experience in the field of TMD and Orofacial Pain, working mainly on the following topics: Viscosupplementation of the TMJ, Non-invasive protocols for TMD control, Functional changes in joint development, Headache and TMD, and Sports Dentistry. He is currently an adjunct professor in the Dentistry Program at the Federal University of Paraná and coordinator of the Specialization Program in TMD and Orofacial Pain at UFPR.

Priscila Brenner Hilgenberg-Sydney is an Adjunct Professor at the Federal University of Paraná, in the areas of TMD and Orofacial Pain and Dental Occlusion. She is a professor in the Graduate Program in Dentistry (PPGO-UFPR).
