Speech-language therapy demand in a specialized center in the South of Brazil

Aim: Characterize children and teenagers demand of speech-language therapy from a healthcare service in the region North/Baltazar Axis, in the city of Porto Alegre, state of Rio Grande do Sul. Materials and methods: This is a transversal study produced by the analysis of electronic data of children and teenagers, from 0 to 18 incomplete years old, treated by the Children and Teenagers Health Specialized Group, from 2018 to 2023. Results: There were 84 medical records analyzed. Out of these, 49 (58,3%) medical records were from male children, 62 (73,8%) were white and other 40 (47,6%) were from children in school age, from 6 to 15 years old. The area of the main chief complaint was the therapy area of language and speech in 75 (89,3%) of the medical records, with chief complaints of changes in speech in 39 (46,4%) of the children. The waiting time for the medical referral was longer than two years in 26 (31%) of the medical records analyzed. Discussion: The results obtained in the study allow further analysis for decisions aimed at minimizing social inequalities and show the importance of accreditation of teams that guarantee the presence of a speech therapist in their professional staff. Conclusions: It was possible to identify the characteristics of the patients treated at the Children and Teenagers Health Specialized Group, which are white, male children, in school age with initial chief complaint of speech changes.
