Abstract

AIM: To analyze, through a literature review, some protocols currently used and highlight which of them provided greater effectiveness in reducing pain, as well as which of them resulted in better longevity. METHODOLOGY: a search was carried out in the PubMed, Lilacs and Semantic Scholar databases, using the following descriptors: dentin hypersensitivity, treatment of dentin hypersensitivity and causes of dentin hypersensitivity. Randomized studies published in the last six years were included, with full text availability and clarity in the methodological detail used, in addition to systematic reviews, meta-analyses and literature reviews, to complement the research. RESULTS: all procedures used to reduce pain are effective. However, the use of lasers, whether alone or in combination, appears to have the best efficiency and greater long-term durability. DISCUSSION: The identification of etiological factors is essential for an effective treatment plan, as is the evaluation of the characteristics of each material to be used in each protocol. However, the disparity in time and different protocols makes it difficult to compare results. CONCLUSION: despite the great variability, laser treatment, especially the high-power Er,Cr:YSGG laser, proved to be quite valid, however, interventions in which lasers were combined with other desensitizing agents, such as GLUMA®, also presented its clinical relevance. However, there is a need to carry out new clinical studies to consolidate the effectiveness and longevity of the various desensitizing materials present on the market.
