Aim: To describe the profile of accidents with biological material notified in the Notifiable Diseases Information System, during the period 2012 to 2016, with dental students, in a municipality in southern Brazil and check for divergences between the records of the Dental Infection Control Commission of an institution in the municipality and those of Information System. Materials and Methods: Observational and descriptive study. For the identification of the Dental School, a complementary search was carried out in the notification forms and nominal location on electronic search sites. The probabilistic relationship of the databases was carried out by manual review, looking for the same names and dates of the accident. Results: There was a predominance of females (89%) and exposures that occurred while performing dental procedures (72.9%); goggles and mask were neglected in about 60% of the cases; of the notifications that contained information about the evolution, 85.5% were characterized as abandonment of clinical follow-up. About 63% of the accidents recorded at the institution's infection control commission were not in the Notifiable Diseases Information System, showing underreporting and flaws in the post-exposure flow. Discussion: The proportion of accidents found, involving students, and their analyzes demonstrate the relevance of prevention strategies in this group, as well as highlight the approach at this opportune moment of training, aiming to guarantee safety in future professional practice. Conclusion: There is a need for approximation between universities and reference services, highlighting the fundamental role of teachers and infection control commission.
