Abstract

Severar hypothesis to exprain decreased resistance to infection of the diabetic patient are reviewd, stresing nutritional status and hormonal action, in relation to Selye's syndrome of adaptation. The stressing action of surgery and infection may agravate the controled diabetic patient, leading him to diabetic coma. Every precaution must be taken in order to avoid hiperglicemia, emotional stress, and post-operative infection, in these patients.
