The knowledge of the physical environment is of great importance to better use and occupation of land, especially in urban areas subject to accelerated growth. This paper describes the geological and geomorphological units in the urban area of the municipality of Santa Cruz do Sul (RS), with a view to obtaining geotechnical information and propose a preliminary subdivision units, based on this information. The applied methodology inclued reinterpretation of city's gelogical and geomorphological data obtained from photo-interpretation, geological mapping, grading characterization tests, petrograpy, X ray diffractometry (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The preliminary photointerpretation allowed an overview of the geological and geomorphological compartimentation of the study area. Subsequent fieldwork, detailed geomorphological and geological photointerpretation, and laboratorial characterization of the materials allowed generating geological and geomorphological units maps of the area in geographical information system (GIS) format. Based on the analysis of cartographic and database information of both maps, the urban area of city was divided into 17 prelimiary geotechnical units with different expected behaviors controlled by their lithology and geomorphological position on slope profiles.Downloads
