Abstract:
This article illustrates the need to balance indigenous knowledge and official school contents. The article suggests indigenous schools struggle to find said balance, in spite of achievements made by indigenous organizations. Although indigenous knowledge is part of the curriculum in indigenous schools, it still does not have the same weight as contents considered “universal”. To present this hypothesis, the article offers data gathered between 2016 and 2018 from various interviews with school teachers and narratives written by indigenous children in Ticuna territory. The study of said materials focused on language structures. To understand the need for balance between indigenous knowledge and official school contents, this article finds inspiration in the current literature on the relation between (Brazilian and Colombian) national societies and the Ticuna people in the Brazilian-Colombian-Peruvian amazonian frontier.
