Indigenous Peoples, Daily Life, and Racism
Forms of Denial of Identity in the Urban Environment
Abstract
Racism against Indigenous peoples has become more noticeable in recent years due to the actions taken by the Indigenous movement, as well as an increasing number of research studies on this subject. This study aims to contribute to the comprehension of this phenomenon by recognizing the effects of racism in the construction of Indigenous ethnic identification. The study analyzed episodes of racism against Indigenous peoples compiled by the Cimi (Missionary Indigenist Council) in their reports entitled "Violence against Indigenous People" between 2003 and 2021. These annual publications show that the urban environment is the most common place where these phenomena occur. In this sense, it was possible to identify how racism is perpetuated by public servants and private agents in a variety of ways - with a particular emphasis on the propagation of hate speech by elected public servants and collective actions taken by private agents. The study found that racism inhibits the establishment of Indigenous ethnic identification and the development of social bonds attached to it.
