This article investigates the impact of daylight-saving time policy on traffic accidents in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil). In order to carry out such analysis, traffic accident data from Public Transport and Circulation Company (PTCC) were used. The period evaluated ranges from January 2010 to December 2019. Following Smith (2016), we distinguish through a fixed effects model the long-term underlying mechanisms: the reduction of one hour of sleep, associated with an increase in the quantity of accidents, and light variation mechanism benefitting evening rush hours, associated with a reduction in the quantity of accidents. The aggregated impact show that the daylight-saving time policy reduces traffic accidents by 7,4%.
