      Abstract

Even in the 21st century, Brazil still remains as one of the most unequal societies in the world. Discrepancies are remarkable even when it is considered the work income all over the country; for instance, income concentration in Northeast is higher than in Southeast. In this article we approach the main variables that explain the work income inequality in these regions, through variance analysis. The results show that variables such as schooling and job position have reinforced inequality. Thus, a higlier schooling level may place people in a higher rank when it comes to get a job. However, a change in the participation of people in the occupation according to the job position is crucial: if public educational policies may lead to a higher schooling, changes in the proportion of people according to job position seem to be a hard task because it requires redefining the industry policy (development policy) to promote certain economic activities aimed at increasing employment rates.
