Abstract

This piece aims analyzing the microcredit programme of the Banco Popular de Ipatinga (Minas Gerais - Brazil) focusing on the possibility of the program to supply credit service to the low-income population together with a sustainable financial structure. The article is divided in three parts, besides an introduction. The first one discusses, on the theoretical grounds, the possibility of a microcredit programme to conciliate its financial feasibility together with its social targets. The second part analyses the social and economic features of Banco Popular's customers. Finally on the conclusion, the authors argued that the objective of financial feasibility tends to constrain and subordinate the social objective of the programme.
