The objective of this article is to contrast Marx's view on the criterion for the adoption of new techniques with the recent contribution on the subject by Prado (2003). It is argued that despite building his model based on Marx's theory of technical progress Prados is not clear about the connection between cost reductions and profit rate gains. It is also a contention of the present article that this lack of clarity obscures the weight of Prado's contribution within the context of the related literature. In order to overcome this a brief review of the literature is presented in the introduction, beginning with the famous Okishio theorem.Downloads
