Emergencies in dentistry: a retrospective study

The purpose of this study was to perform a restrospective epidemiological survey of the emergency cases perfomed in the Emergency Clinics of Dental School - UFRGS, from June to Semptember of 2002. 918 patients were treated and the analyzed data were: age. gender, medical history, use of medicaments, diagnosis related to the complaint and the stomatological conditions as well the treatment performed. The results indicated that: 63,51% of the patients were 21-50 year old; females (65,24%) prevailed over males (34,76%); the main reasons for consultations were: pulpitis, acute dento-alveolar abscess deep caries, necrosis, caries periodontal abcess and dental fractures. The treatments more used were: endodontic access, temporary filling, extraction and prescription of medicaments.
