Significance of water fluoridation in small towns in the southeast area of the state of São Paulo

Abstract


Great part of cities in Brazil which do not have water fluoridation are from the group of the small towns that have around 10.000 habitants. The objective of this study was to compare the oral health of students from small towns with and without fluoridated water. 1566 students aged 5 to 12 were sam pled, being 676 from cities with water fluori dation (Aguas de São Pedro and Mornbuca), and 890 from cities without water fluoridati on (Ipeúna and Corumbatai). They were exa mined by 11 dentists (intraexaminer agree ment above 98% and inter above 97%). The indexes dmft and DMFT were assessed for dental caries experience according to the
