Abstract

Five cases of osteoma are available in the files of the Laboratory of Oral Pathology of the FO/UFRGS. They were studied in order to establish the main caracteristics for its d iagnosis. We settle that the osteoma is a slow growing tumor that is found mainly in the lower jaw. The focal assimetry is the main reason for it diagnosis. Based upon the radiographic findings the tumor can be observed when it is in a subperiosteal position, if composed by compact bone. Histologically the tumor is composed by canceious or compact bone with a morphology that resembles normal bone. The correct histological diagnosis only can be taken with a association of the clinic and radiographic features.
