Abstract

This article derived from a research work aiming at analyzing concepts of motherhood and child care in a group of mothers of children participating in Pra-Nenê Program, in Vila Cruzeiro do Sul, Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in 2002. It aims at analyzing, the concepts of motherhood expressed by mothers, nurses, and official documents which guide that program, and how these were related to each other. Results show the existence of a conflict between concepts of motherhood and child care of the group of mothers and those present in the program text and in the educational practices developed by nurses.
