Abstract

The article presents a theoretical revision on Management for Competence and brings contributions for nurses in nursing management. Literature review used the International Database for Medical Literature (MEDLINE) and Latin-American and Caribbean Health Sciences (LILACS) databases, between 1999 and 2008. The following categories emerged: historical conceptualization of competencies evolution; essential and individual competencies; contributions for the knowledge of Management by Competencies in Nursing. This review showed the health organizations have not adopted Management by Competence as a model, probably because it is a tool that requires specific knowledge and learning. It was considered that nurses need to be warned that they must be prepared for changes in the management of organizations, be trained in hospital management, and to broaden their knowledge, as Management by Competence may be a very useful instrument for Nursing human resources.
