Evaluation of insecticidal effects of Tabernaemontana catharinensis A.DC. (Apocynaceae) and Zeyheria montana Mart. (Bignoniaceae) extracts against the fly Zaprionus indianus (Díptera: Drosophilidae) (Gupta, 1970)

Abstract

Zaprionus indianus (Díptera: Drosophilidae) (Gupta, 1970) is considered a potential pest-fly of commercial fruits in Brazil, particularly for cultivars of figs, star fruits and persimmons in  the southeast area. Considering the need of new alternatives for Z. indianus control, the aim of this work was to evaluate the insecticidal activity of ethanol extracts from Tabernaemontana catharinensis A.DC. (Apocynaceae: Tabernaemontana) stem bark and Zeyheria montana Mart. (Bignoniaceae: Zeyheria) leaves against different development stages of Z. indianus. Overall results showed that these extracts did not affect this fly in the adult stage, neither considering the total number of survivors when compared to control group or survival ratio by sex. However, they were effective in inhibiting the emergence of imagoes of Z. indianus, which could be of relevance for the control of this harmful fruit fly.

Possui graduação em Farmácia Bioquímica pela Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto (1997), mestrado em Ciências Biológicas: Bioquímica, pela Faculdade de Medicina da USP de Ribeirão Preto SP (2000) e doutorado em Ciências Biológicas: Bioquímica pela Faculdade de Medicina USP Ribeirão Preto (2004). Possui também um breve Pós-Doc pela FMRP (USP) (2004-2005). Atualmente é professor Titular-Pesquisador da Universidade de Ribeirão Preto, Professor Associado-Pós/colaborador da Universidade Federal de Rondônia/IPEPATRO, Avaliador Inep/MEC, Professor credenciado da Pós-graduação da Faculdade de Medicina da USP de Ribeirão Preto SP, e Professor de Química do Colégio Pirâmide (Anglo). Tem experiência na área de Bioquímica, com ênfase em Neuroquímica e Neurobiologia, além de Farmacologia e Prospecção de ativos naturais. Publicou 23 artigos em revistas especializadas e 2 patente. É ainda Co-editor das revistas Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology e Annual Review of Biomedical Sciences e também Bolsista de Produtividade do CNPQ (Nível II).
