Turnera ulmifolia L. (Turneraceae) is an indigenous herb from tropical America, occurring naturally in empty urban lands. In folk medicine, it is used for treating pains, fever, rheumatism, bleeding and digestive disorders. The hydroalcoholic extract of leaves of T. ulmifolia was analysed for molluscicidal activity against adult snails of Biomphalaria glabrata, for cytotoxicity potential with brine shrimp assay and for phytochemistry characterization. The hydroalcoholic extract was active in the brine shrimp lethality bioassay (LC50 = 224.56 µg/mL) and did not show any activity against adult snails of B. glabrata after 72 hours from treatment onset. The results indicated the presence of secondary metabolites as cyanogenic glycosides, hydrolysable tannins, flavonoids, steroids and alkaloids. These results suggest the potential of T. ulmifolia leaves for obtaining actives compounds, mainly with antitumoral activity.Downloads
