Interactions between capuchin monkeys (Sapajus sp.) and humans in the Poço Escuro forest reserve, Vitória da Conquista city, Bahia state, Brazil

Abstract

Primates from genus Sapajus have a high capacity of exploring resources originated from human environments, which eventually leads to potential damage to both species. We aimed to describe interactions between humans (inhabitants and visitors) and individuals of Sapajus spp. in the Poço Escuro forest reserve, Vitória da Conquista city, Bahia state, Brazil. The study area is inhabited by a group with at least three Sapajus species and their hybrids. The site receives constant human visitation and is surrounded by two neighborhoods. We performed direct observation of the monkeys; collection of data from the Municipal Health Department; interviews with visitors, workers and neighbors; and a documental analysis of the plants in the reserve that are consumed by Sapajus individuals. There are not enough trees at the fruiting stage in the reserve during the dry season, which may be forcing the monkeys to search for food of human origin and rendering them dependent on the food supplementation provided by the City Hall. Conflicts related to food offer increase the risk of accidents. It is crucial to raise awareness among residents and visitors and provide technical training to the reserve workers. The implementation of measures aiming to improve animal welfare is also mandatory.
