In vitro potential for phosphate solubilization by Trichoderma spp.

Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for plant growth; however, most of it in the soil is in the form of inorganic phosphate, which cannot be used by plants. Some rhizosphere microorganisms are able to solubilize inorganic phosphate, aiding in plant development. Trichoderma sp. is a funguswidely used as biological control agent of plant diseases, being found associated with roots. We evaluated the in vitro potential
of Trichoderma spp. isolates for solubilizing calcium phosphate in PVK medium, and their ability to acidify the medium and
produce phosphatase enzymes. All isolates were able to solubilize phosphate in the medium and showed correlation between
the solubility of calcium phosphate and acidification of the culture medium. Isolate ICB08 (T. asperellum) solubilized higher
concentrations of phosphate in the medium than the other isolates, in the tested time interval. All isolates showed enzymatic
activity, varying in concentration and type of phosphatase produced. Phosphate solubilization also showed correlation with
phosphatase production. Isolate ICB18 (T. asperellum) showed the highest enzyme activity in the tested time period, producing
both acid and alkaline phosphatases. We concluded that the isolates showed potential for solubilization, through both acidification
of the culture medium and production of acid and alkaline phosphatases.
