Garbage cartography in Belém (PA), Amazonia: a case study

Abstract

Waste is a current and global problem. In Belém, he has gained more prominence in the last decade, due to increases in uncertainties and deficits in the maintenance of solid waste and debris collection services in the city, which proliferate in various places. Thus, we aim to contribute to the understanding of the causes and consequences of the increasing spatial distribution of waste in the city through a mapping of irregular garbage deposits. To achieve this objective, we used the mixed method as a methodological approach, and we concluded that the production of waste and irregular deposits is large and diverse, consisting of domestic household waste, wood/pruning/weeding, and construction debris. The garbage dumps are 'small', but numerous, distributed at points across vast areas of central and peripheral neighborhoods of the city, and they affect the movement of people and transportation in revitalized spaces and the outskirts.
