Diagnosis of the quality of groundwater intended for human consumption in wells of the Quaternary Coastal Aquifer System I - RS

The use of coastal aquifers has intensified globally due to the development and exploration of coastal areas in recent decades, impacting these reserves with an important economic, social, and environmental role in both qualitative and quantitative terms. Considering this scenario, this study aimed to verify the quality of groundwater quality in the Quaternary Coastal Aquifer System I - RS intended for human consumption, through a comparative analysis of physical, chemical, and biological parameters from wells registered in public databases, distributed throughout the aquifer system, against the potability standards established by Federal Ordinance No. 888 of May 2021 of the Ministry of Health. Of the 28 parameters analyzed, 19 presented at least one occurrence with concentrations exceeding the Maximum Permissible Values (MPV) established by law. Thus, the occurrence of at least one parameter above the MPV for potability was identified in 127 wells, 38% of the 329 analyzed, of which 81 (25%) were classified as active wells, located in 20 of the 25 municipalities analyzed.
