Dynamic Cultural Map of Rio Grande, Rio Grande do Sul: A WebGIS Application

Abstract

Cultural mapping offers the community the opportunity to explore its land, ancestry and traditions, thereby contributing to the strengthening and preservation of its local cultural identity. Therefore, this study aims to develop a dynamic cultural map of Rio Grande, with data from 2020, 2021 and with partial updates in 2022 and 2023. For this purpose, georeferencing was conducted for cultural workers, cultural spaces, and museums within the municipality. This was made possible through data provided by the Secretaria de Cultura, Esporte e Lazer de Rio Grande (SMCEL). Additionally, further research was conducted using Google Maps to collect details about the museums, including their location and history. Based on this information, a Geographic Information System was developed and made available online (WebGIS). Furthermore, access to the WebGIS was granted to the Secretaria de Cultura, Esporte e Lazer for planning and management of cultural aspects, with the aim of also making heritage accessible, recognized and used by society.
