From classroom to city: lessons of historical archaeology in city center of Teresina

Abstract

Activities concerning actions directed at recognizing collective cultural heritage should involve repeated practices to encourage the approximation of people and their cultural references. However, as this is not just any approximation, mechanisms should be put in place to avoid the construction of inert cultural heritage, and to avoid increasing the distance. Among the possible actions, pedagogical practices developed in undergraduate courses, such as Archeology, can lead to repeated discussions about cultural heritage and generate ways of reducing this distance. This article discusses and experience of approximation with the cultural heritage of Teresina, Piauí, developed by way of guided visits to two squares, shedding light on seeing/reading these urban resources through the logic of the production of space in that city, within the organized and unequal movement of capitalism. One of the results was a theoretical and practical orientation among the students of the process of destruction and construction of urban cultural heritage in Teresina.
