Abstract

The aim here is to understand the relationship between ethnography and photography, which has its origins at the same time, the mid-19th century. What are the similarities between them? What contributions can photography bring to ethnography? What is the role of otherness, both for anthropology and for photography? What kind of knowledge can photography provide? What drives a person to dedicate herself/himself with passion to the art of photography? I try to develop these questions from the results of the research that I have recently concluded on the photographs of Claudia Andujar, Lux Vidal and Maureen Bisilliat.
