Abstract

The essay offers images from the itinerary taken by the researcher to the wake of footballer Pelé. The observation emphasized certain routes and spaces until reaching the surroundings of the Urbano Caldeira stadium, Vila Belmiro, in the city of Santos, where his body was laid to rest. The ethnographic scale made it possible to capture the weave of visual signs revealed in an experience more refractory to the spectacular and media performances that usually surround the funerals of public sports personalities. The rhythm of wandering in the field captured consenting and furtive images, suggesting a certain imbrication of emotions with the antagonistic ideals of nationhood condensed in that funeral rite taken as a political allegory. The silences and the imaginary perception of collective loss reach some of the sensitive and performative experiences that have mobilized contemporary Brazil.
