Abstract

Ernest Cline's novel Ready Player One is a kind of futuristic utopia in which people have finally conquered their City of the Sun, their New Atlantis and, why not, their Utopia. In this world where technology has evolved in a unique way, synesthesia is possible that moves your mind and body to other universes, both similar to the real world and those that are part of literature, cinema and games. Within this technocratic society, we have contact with everything we could wish for, making us forget that there is a world with sensations and people made of flesh and blood outside of Oasis. Based on the concepts of romantic escapism from classic works of Brazilian literature, the idea of technique and societies based on this political and social dimension, especially based on the notions of Ortega y Gasset, we arrive at a more careful analysis of Cline's book, which, far from it, it is just a work of entertainment. The work can be seen from the ideas of ideal societies that Campanella, Morus and Bacon thought about between the 16th and 17th centuries, reaching our future with Oasis, a world in which you could not only be whoever you wanted but also leave of being someone you didn't want to be. The work also undergoes a crossing of the idea of self that is present in several authors, but that we can treat from the perspective of an American psychoanalyst who also dialogues with tradition, Nancy McWilliams.
