Abstract

From the examination of one hundred editions of the Revista Brasileira de Estatística (Brazilian Magazine for Statistics), by IBGE, published between 1940 and 1964, the present text analyses andinterpretsthe internal pattern of the periodical underlining its play in the construction of the framework structuration of the Brazilian field of statistics. Items such as organization of the sections and the recurrence of themes allow us, in this sense, to identify which are the relevant questions for the subject during that period and, at the same time, show us the effort madefor the construction of a specific image of Brazilian statistics to the people from that period. Among the subjects discussed in the magazine, it is highlighted here the question of the formation of statisticians as one of the points of tension in the affirmation of the autonomy of the field.
