An encounter with burlesque: a vulgar woman's report

Abstract

This essay presents performative experiences carried out by the author and which are marked by tensions between sexuality, violence, desire, and power. Our aim is to problematize value judgments on the expression of female sexuality and the various consequences stemming from structural sexism. Articulating aspects of the feminist writer Virginie Despentes (2016), the sociologist and anthropologist Loïc Wacquant (2002), and the artist Mariana Bandarra (2023), this work outlines some of the performer's motivations for choosing the path of the so-called "vulgar woman," more desiring than desired, and the way burlesque has provided her a space of expression capable of embracing her desire for provocation and questioning. This essay is part of the author's master's research, which aims to analyze these performances in light of the above-mentioned authors, drawing on her own experiences as a guiding thread.

Cláudia Müller Sachs, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul – UFRGS, Porto Alegre/RS, Brasil

Professora de práticas corporais no Departamento de Arte Dramática da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). Cursou Doutorado (2013) e Mestrado (2004) em TEATRO na Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina-UDESC. Foi coordenadora do curso de teatro da UFRGS (2019 a 2021). Estudou com Jacques Lecoq em sua escola em Paris (1992/93). Trabalha como atriz, diretora, preparadora corporal e professora de teatro com ênfase em interpretação, movimento corporal, improvisação e preparação de ator. Atualmente pesquisando a linguagem das máscaras.
