Iambic Pentameter: an update for contemporary times

Abstract

This work analyzes the iambic pentameter, a rhythm pattern present in English speech and especially in Shakespearean plays. We argue its rhythmic validity and its exchange for pulse. For such premises, theories on rhythm in music and in linguistics will be used to understand the place of rhythm today, in theater, and its implications on stagnating stage speech. As a rhythmic pattern, the iambic pentameter implies a monotonous and antagonist use on stage, being a place where subtle and explicit rhythm, and other sound parameters, are expected. An alternative to that is to understand the iambic pentameter as a regular pulse upon which the rhythm may vary.
