Abstract

Based on questions about the body, this conference will explain how, within the dance studies in France, the analysis of movement considers that it is the gesture that produces the “body”. After presenting Hubert Godard’s theory of the four structures of the corporality we will demonstrate the importance of taking the reading of the gesture as a tool for research in dance. How do you go from walking to dancing? What is the dialogue between the interpreters of a duet in love? Concrete examples of analysis, taken from the musical ‘The band wagon’ (Vincent Minelli, 1953, with Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse) will illustrate our remarks.
