In the cultural milieu of the Weimar Republic, theater criticism emerged as a pivotal institution. Among the numerous topics that animated the intellectual disputes of the era, the discourse surrounding the form and function of criticism itself stood out as a particularly salient point of contention. This article examines this debate, exploring the formal and historical assumptions that underpinned it. To this end, it begins with a contextualization of theater criticism in newspapers at the beginning of the 18th century, tracing its influence on the development of a distinct German tradition of theater criticism. Finally, the article analyzes how certain aspects of this tradition manifest in the intellectual clash between Alfred Kerr and Herbert Ihering in the 1920s.
