Malazarte: The Symbolist Aesthetic in the Premiere of a Play of Circumstance in Paris (1911)

Abstract

This work is the result of a bibliographic and documentary research on the premiere and reception of Malazarte, a character from Brazilian folklore that Graça Aranha transformed into the protagonist of his theatrical play, published in 1911 in both French and Portuguese. With the premiere in the same year, Aranha sought to establish himself as a representative of pre-modernism in Europe, with the first performances staged by a French company for a select audience in Paris. Based on chronicles and critiques from Brazilian newspapers, it is concluded that the play was conceived to reflect the philosophical and aesthetic transformations of the cultural shift in Europe, functioning as a symbolist experiment.
