It is possible to find different remarks on contemporary performance that are based on Jacques Rancière’s thinking on the question of the spectator reception. Rancière wrote the essay The Emancipated Spectator based on ideas developed in his book The Ignorant Schoolmaster. It was an opportunity for the philosopher to discuss theoretical and politics presuppositions that still underpin the debate on theatre and performance. Reading once more Rancière’s books and analysing his proposal of politics as dissensus, this paper asks if we have sufficiently discussed emacipation and reception.
