Abstract

This article presents a brief biography of Alfred Jarry, who, although known in Brazil as the author of Ubu Rei, was an eclectic and inventive artist whose influences spanned the fields of theater, literature, graphic design, visual arts and what would become performance. Some of his innovations in literature, design and theatrical staging are put into context. Information is presented on his family background, his school life and how, through an eccentric way of life, he has constructed a spectacularised image for himself.
