Abstract

This article introduces an artistic and pedagogical approach to circus performers, which is based on the principles, concepts and practices of the Laban/Bartenieff System. Students were observed at the National Circus School Luiz Olimecha, in Rio de Janeiro, which is a relevant microcosm of circus in Brazil. The observation showed the recurrent dichotomy in the circus field which is present not only at the School, but also in other teaching spaces and among professional artists: the distinction between technique and artistic procedures. Elements from the Laban/Bartenieff System efficiently address such dichotomy by offering references that support both instances, allowing the elaboration of a methodology in which the gaps between technique and art, trainning and creation are bridged.

Artista, professor, diretor e pesquisador circense. Professor na Escola Nacional de Circo Luiz Olimecha, Mestrando no PPGAC da UNIRIO. Desenvolve trabalhos artístico-pedagógicos no circo com pesquisas voltadas para os processos de criação, metodologia de aprendizagem em acrobacias aéreas e história do circo.

Artista-docente-pesquisadora, professora associada da Escola de Teatro da Unirio, no Departamento de Interpretação Teatral. Atua na Pós-Graduação (PPGAC) e na Graduação, nas disciplinas de Corpo e Movimento. Coordena a Pesquisa “Ator rapsodo: pesquisa de procedimentos para uma linguagem gestual”. Suas áreas de interesse têm ênfase no trabalho do ator, com desdobramentos nos temas que envolvem as pedagogias do ator, o teatro narrativo-performático e a conexão entre teatro e espiritualidade.
