Abstract

The Meaning First approach argues that meaning precedes syntax through two components, a generator and a compressor, responsible for structuring and reducing conceptual representations. Within this perspective, causative sentences with a light verb, such as “Marcelo made break the glass,” are considered “decompressed” forms and are therefore less acceptable to adults. In addition, they are interpreted as indirect when a second implicit agent is inferred. This study tested these predictions using an acceptability experiment combined with a sentence–picture matching task. Adult acceptability and interpretation of causative structures with and without “make” were analyzed. The results showed lower acceptance of “decompressed” forms, but a preference for direct interpretations. The findings suggest that the approach requires further revision.
