Abstract

This paper studies the borders present in the literature of Jorge Luis Borges, especially those related to the divisions and crossings between the dimensions: Creole, native and European, north and south, past and present, civilization and barbarism, reality and dream, and city and countryside. After a review of nineteenth-century literature and its conceptions of the dichotomies that laid the foundations for thinking about the national identity, as well as the point of view of the Argentine literary tradition constituted around the figure of the gaucho, Borges replies to such problems by proposing other ways of thinking about them, based on the transit of borders in El escritor argentino y la tradición and El Sur.
