Abstract

This essay aims to analyze the issue of literary expansions and the so-called post-autonomous literatures from the point of view of both the conceptual indeterminacy of the notion of literature and the task of literary criticism that arises from it. The aim is to demonstrate, on the one hand, that the speculative compositional impulse is constitutive of the “large, loose, baggy” monsters that literary works are, according to Henry James’s famous formulation, and, on the other, that the task of literary criticism, increasingly difficult to perform due to the complexity and plurality of the materials that literature gathers for itself, remains that of informing and reconstructing the objectuality of literary objects.
