Abstract

In this article, we investigate some approximations between Chico Buarque’s novel Budapeste and Machado de Assis’s more mature novels, Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas, Dom Casmurro and Memorial de Aires. The comparison will be based on the actions of the narrators, whose main points of encounter are volatility and the movements of discovering and covering up. For this, we will take into account the studies of Roberto Schwarz (2000) and John Gledson (2003) on the works of Machado de Assis. Based on this exercise, we expose the reified relationship that the narrator of the novel Budapest, by Chico Buarque, has with literature, identifying how Machado de Assis’s narrators and their hidden social contradictions echo in the contemporary author’s formal project.
