A LEITURA DE DAVI MOREIRA CALDAS SOBRE IMPRESSÕES E GEMIDOS (1870), DE JOSÉ CORIOLANO DE SOUSA LIMA

Abstract

This article analyzes the literary criticism undertaken by Davi Moreira Caldas in the preface to the poetry collection Impressões e Gemidos (1870), by José Coriolano de Sousa Lima. The study sought to understand how Caldas interpreted the Romantic tendency in the work and problematized literary genres in his evaluation. Based on the theoretical contributions of Löwy and Sayre, Abrams, Gumbrecht, and Staiger, the investigation focused on the argumentative organization and the aesthetic and political repertoires that guided the preface writer. By analyzing the poems highlighted by Caldas, the text demonstrates how it conferred centrality to the effects of presence and the different modulations of Romanticism in Sousa Lima’s work, as well as its insertion into the intellectual and aesthetic debates circulating in the 19th century
