Abstract

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this paper is to closely examine the poetry of Maria Júlia Cortines Laxe, or simply Júlia Cortines (Rio Bonito, December 12, 1868 — Rio de Janeiro, 1948) as an instance in which language and consciousness develop into poetry. I argue that this development overlaps and at times identifies with the development of the mind into philosophy, but turns away from it at key points, becoming distinctively poetic. Most of the very few serious commentators of Cortines’s work have acknowledged the proximity of her poetry to philosophical thought, but have failed to demonstrate of what this proximity consists and what its unique shape is. What kind of philosophical thought Cortines’s poetry comes closest to and why is her language particularly poetic is what I intend to disclose throughout this reading.
